This place is my new found love. I had never been a huge Greek food fan and was hesitant to try it from a "fast food" type setting, but it is amazing! The food is always so fresh and perfectly seasoned! Its great for dinner after a long day and doesn't make you feel like you do after eating a pizza! Lately I have eaten here about once a week. I am hoping I don't burn myself out on it. I always get the chicken souvlaki and a side of the fried mushrooms. Overall I give this place five stars. My only suggestion for them would be to stop wasting lettuce leaves as a garnish. They get soggy and gross and I can't think that anyone would miss it!

Well this was the highest rated (cheap) Greek place on Yelp, an I was craving a gyro. Unfortunately I enjoyed these often while living in France, and I have yet to find one even close to the deliciousness I had there. As for this gyro, it wasn't gross by any means, but it wasn't awesome. I felt it lacked flavor and was slightly on the dry side. So I was bummed. If anyone has a recommendation for a truly awesome and flavorful gyro, let me know!

I had the chicken souvlaki and enjoyed it. The chicken was done nicely with the vegetables and rice. The fry's were soggy and over cooked on one side. I also got a gyro but only had the meat. The meat was delicious with the white sauce on it. When I went to sit down to wait for the food. The table was sticky with garbage on it. I asked the lady behind the counter for something to clean it with and received a rude response that she will clean it. I have to give it low points for the service as it was not clean and I offered to do their job while getting my head bit off for it.

Old but clean interior makes dining in comfortable. The wait on food was longer than I thought but the food was more fresh than I thought it would be too. Homeless people abound nearby and a few came inside looking for ice water. I could eat two plates of their seasoned rice if they offered it as a stand alone.

Grilled cheese sandwich on pita bread?! What's not to like?

Place was small and crowded. Food was really great. First time trying the Greek spaghetti and I loved it!!! Best Greek food I've ever eaten

Craved greek food so I went and got takeout. Prices are good for the portion. I got a chicken souvlaki with rice and pita bread. The pita bread was good, not great. The rice was really flavorful but got a bit salty after about halfway through. The chicken souvlaki was very dry. The souvlaki had onion and zucchini on it as well, with the zucchini being over seasoned and the onion under seasoned. I would like to go back and try perhaps the pork or a different dish. Maybe a gyro?

I must say that this was a much needed meal. Good and wholesome Greek food. I had gyro and souvlaki platter and it was amazing. No gimmicks just good food and great quality. Portions were good as well. I will definitely be stopping here while in SLC.

We have been coming here since we started dating almost 20 years ago. We still come here. Newer decor, which is nice. Same great service and fabulous food. We love it when they are at the Greek Festival!!

I came to this greek place and got burger and fries. And was promptly made fun of by my friends. I really wanted to try the much talked about french fries. And they tasted exactly how you expect them to taste from a place like this. They were good. Won't be craving them. But a good crispy fry. I also got the burger and it was pretty good. Burger along the lines of Hires Big-H. We also got a Greek gyro. It was too salty for my palate. But my friends loved it. If you like Greek---this may be the place for you. I will probably stop back in sometime to try the Baklava and donuts. And will probably get another burger if I hadn't had lunch yet that day.

Online ordering works well and is fast and efficient. Good Greek fast food and a fast food joint with a somewhat decent greek salad.

I always order the Low-Carb salad with gyro meat and it never disappoints. Lots of veggies and lots of meat! The dressing is also tangy and delish. Love it.

Great prices, decent food, open late! Definitely worth checking out.

Very good! This is a good fast food restaurant with an interesting menu. I had a gyro with lamb and beef. They recommended the white sauce and gave me red on the side so I could taste both. Both were great! The restaurant was clean. Great service for a take out joint. Will go back often.

I love gyros and Greek fare. I also love feta. But seriously, it is not tofu and a little goes a long way. They put enough feta on my gyro for me to take the excess off, save for later, and put on at least 5 other servings. Otherwise, the spanakopita and sauce were tasty.

    (2)
  • Daniel O.

I'm no Greek food connoisseur but I freaking love this place. I honestly eat here at least once a week. The spanakopita is very good, the salad is good (greek vinaigrette dressing is great) and the lentil bean soup is super yummy! My only complaint is the staff doesn't have much of a personality- some do but most are robotic. But the food is fantastic!

This is third time Ive eaten here in the last 6 months The first two times were bad, Poor service incorrect order, but this time.... We ordered beef gyros and all four of them were burnt... the sauce tasted off what a mess, At 6$ a gyro I think never again! I had a class afterward and have been sick to my stomach for hours! What has happened to this place? it use to be so good..

Solid option for really quick Greek food. I've long since been a fan of Greek Souvlaki, from my 10-year-old days of getting it with my stepdad to modern times when I've needed a quick Greek fix. The quality has remained about the same though I didn't remember them having the rice as an option (definitely an added plus for those who don't want to overdose on fried food!) The restaurant is clean and the service is effecient. Prices have risen with the times like everything in this world. It's not a place to go on a first date, but more for when you've established a foothold in the relationship. They apparently have plenty of good veggie options as well. I like that they have opened new locations across the valley. I want to see this business succeed.

I happened to see this place and since I love Greek food I decided to give it a try . Very glad I did because I was served with one of the best, if not THE best, gyros I've ever had. They certainly do not scrimp on ingredients...super thick with succulent meat and heavy on the tzatziki sauce. (Love the stuff, could probably eat it by the spoonful.) Service was pleasant and super quick. Decor is nothing to get excited over but was clean and totally fine. Cost of the gyro was $6.03 and was totally worth it. I'll be in SLC a couple more days and will for sure be back to this place.

Every time I come to Greek Soulvaki I'm amazed at how delicious the food is. I tried the Baklava shake today, omg. I'm in Heaven.

After seeing this chain around Utah I finally stopped by to see if I could get a cheap but delicious fast food gyro to satiate my craving. The service was quick and friendly, and the fries were slightly crispy (and therefore delicious). Naturally the decor was your standard fast food affair (on appearance and comfort). The food arrived promptly and I would give it a solid B. Warm, good meet, soft pita, but the tzatziki sauce (or the white sauce, as the employee called it) lacked flavor. It tasted mostly like light sour cream (which is delicious in some ways) and I was looking for that signature cucumber fresh flavor. I'd probably stop by again in a pinch, but my gyro hunt continues.

I have been to this establishment 3 times. Every single time I have placed an order it has taken about 20 -30 minutes to get my sandwich. Every time has been a disaster. The cooks don't get it right - the people at the front counter don't get it right. NOT GOOD! However all those reviews and everyone keeps saying - oh this place is the best! At first I thought I must have some kind of communication disorder where I just wasn't being understood - It was a SIMPLE order and my dining companions told me that my expectations were just too high - Hey this ain't NY or Chicago!. Tonight (4/15/2015) - we all ordered gyros and beefteki's - a simple order. 30 minutes later we all got totally super burned up and nasty old food. Thank goodness - it just wasn't me! Not going to waste my time and money again over here! Much better places to go with better service and higher quality of food and better cooks in the area!

A Greek fast food joint that is locally owned by a Grecian? Um...yes please. For the most part I was very satisfied with the quality of my meal. The gyro meat was sliced thick and seasoned very well. However, mine seemed to have no feta at all, and had large, hard to eat slices of tomato. The tzatziki, which they have renamed "white sauce" for all the laymen out there who can't pronounce foreign words, was more like mayo with bits of cucumber added. Quite a disappointment since real tzatziki can add an amazing freshness to an otherwise heavy entrée. The Greek honey doughnuts, or "loukoumades" were little bites of heaven. Crispy balls of fried sweet bread sitting in a bed of honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. Oh yeah. All considered, a successful Americanization of Mediterranean cuisine.

Great service, very fast, and amazingly delightful for the ol' taste buds. I very much like the lemon rice, Greek doughnuts, and the chicken souvlaki. They also have online ordering if you would rather do that, which i thought was pretty cool. Do yourself a favor and get some food here. You'll be glad you did! Opa!

  • Karen S.

Food was ok service was very fast! I had the Gyro sandwich combo with rice, lots of rice and a mediocre size sandwich, hubby had the same but with fries, totaled $18.97 a bit pricy for what you get!

I have been wanting to go here for some time as I LOVE greek food. It got good reviews so I felt confident in trying it out. At a church party, I had also once had their catered food (kabobs and the like) and it was delicious. It was lunch time on a weekday when I went with my friend and children. It was packed but the service was very fast and friendly. We got our food within five to eight minutes of ordering and found a table easily. I ordered the Gyro plate. It was really tasty. Good pita, meat, tzaziki sauce, and tomatoes. The rice and fried were fine. I definitely plan on going back.

Ordered a basic gyro and really liked it, although, I was disappointed to find out that extra tzatziki sauce was an additional 50 cent.

  • Joe Q. Y.

I really like this place. The gyros are great. Probably, some of the best that I have ever had. The fries and onion rings are great too. Usually, the lemon rice is fantastic, but this last time it was only okay. It costs about $9 for a gyro, fries or onion rings or lemon rice or can half order two of the three, and a soda. Or you can get the above (minus the soda) and get a salad. The place is small and gets packed. So, get here early or take it to go. If you like gyros or want to try a delicious Greek sandwich, stop on by and enjoy. I like this place and I hope you will too.

  • Ashlea P.

My boyfriend and I enjoyed the vegetarian and standard gyros. They were delicious, though both a little too light on veggies. The baklava was also good, though a little stale. Best part of the meal was the fries--thick-cut and fresh.

  • Emily B.

I've been eating here for a long time and they are always consistent. Whenever I get a craving for Greek, for some reason or another, I end up coming here. Since I'm a vegetarian, I always get their veggie gyro and fries. It's simple with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and feta but it sure is tasty. This last time, I decided to try their new sweet potato fries as a side and I'm sure glad I did. They were the best sweet potato fries that I've had by far! In fact, I find myself craving them again so I might have to make another trip soon.

This is by far my favorite place to eat. We come here at least once a week. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. In the 20 plus years we have been coming here we have never had less then perfect service and food. 5 stars is not enough for them 10 stars.

  • Chris T.

For the money it's great! The dolmathes are better than I've had at much more expensive restaurants. The chicken souvlaki and gyros are great. The salads are great. You really can't go wrong.

  • Jason N.

Best gyro in SLC hands down. What makes this sandwich so amazing? Perfectly browned meat, none of that grey, spongy, wet meat you find at lesser establishments. Also the white sauce and pita are quality.

  • Jamie G.

I'm madly in love with the Classic Greek salad here! The online ordering is very easy, the turnaround time is very fast, and you can walk right up to the counter without waiting in line to grab your order and go. This place is tiny inside, so I'd recommend taking advantage of their efficient online ordering option. Side note: adding extra olives or feta is just 50 cents for an incredibly generous portion. As I said, I'm head over heels for this place!

Food: 3.5 stars for a fast food place. Service: 3 stars, good service nothing special. Cleanliness: 2 stars, please don't clean the floor while people are still eating, even if it's close to closing time. Atmosphere: 3.5 stars, like some of the decor elements, again for a fast food place.

  • Youssef T.

For about $10 after tax it's not that good. If it was 5-6 bucks I would give it 3 stars.

I cant give this five stars because the owners treat their workers like ''slaves" and the restrooms are not the best, but the food is excellent and yummy.

  • Courtney K.

The food is always fresh and tastes amazing. Their gyro has a very large portion of meat that tastes better than any of the other smaller Greek places around. For the price, this place is great! Never disappoints me!

For good reason that I will detail later, I am reviewing only the Chicken Souvlaki family style using pickup service. We tried souvlaki several times. The meal itself is excellent and consistently prepared. The amounts served are more than adequate, and packaged so that the meal maintains table-ready temperatures for a good length of time. The baklava and dolmathes are excellent and authentic added items as well. The staff go out of their way to be helpful, and they have shown real flexibility to accommodate substitutions even if the changes appeared inconvenient for them.`The staff seemed surprisingly good for and concerned with the well-being of even children visiting the restaurant who correspondingly remained well-behaved. This review serves as a (family style meal pickup) supplement to others already submitted here, because this is right on my way and is a good place to stop when arriving at a friend's place with a meal is the good thing to do. That is the only time that I am in this part of downtown, and we enjoyed the Chicken Souvlaki family style so much that we have ordered that every time. While the individual meals served here looked delicious as reviews here imply that they should be, I can confirm that takeout is also an excellent purchase here. I would more precisely rate this as 4.5 stars. It seems more fair to round the rating upward, if only because several other ratings seem slightly low in light of the reported problems encountered.

I eat here all the time and have also taken advantage of their online ordering system so I dont have to wait. I always get the gyros and they are fantastic and very satisfying. The baklava is very good also. Love the pita bread. The fries arent very good but thats not greek food anyway, just dont order it. Also, if youre watching your sodium intake, they will hold the salt on the gyro if you ask! The staff here are very polite and always have a smile on their face. Love it!

  • Charles S.

This is typical SLC Greek fast food. Nothing special here. The fries were crispy and delicious. The fry sauce was tasty. The gyro meat was too salty and very dry. The rice was delicious, but a bit too salty. The salad was fresh and the Greek dressing was okay. Service was fine. For $8.99, including tax, the gyro plate (gyro, fries, rice, salad) was a great deal. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at Greek Souvlaki, but I might stop in again if I'm in the neighborhood.

Fantastic gyros. I like the white sauce best. Also, they put multiple tomatoes on their gyros, which I really appreciate. The staff seems to always be smiling.

Get the spicy feta dip! Pitas were great with this dip. The gyro was okay, and I really enjoyed the rice that came with it. They do crazy takeout service, but have space to sit down and eat. Not a massive menu, but I'd definitely go back.

    (4)
  • N M.

My favorite Greek food in town and much better than the sit down joint on the same block. The gyros are delicious and the rice will kill you, but you'll love every second of it.

Will never come here again. The one star they are getting is for the service - very nice, friendly, and prompt. The location is also pretty good and the establishment fairly clean. I thought I was in for a treat judging by the fair number of people eating inside, but oh was i wrong. So lets start at the bad and move our way down, shall we? The food is sub par. We had both the gyro and the chicken souvlaki. The chicken was kind of dry and not seasoned very well, and the rice was just meh. The gyro also lacked a little something... it was just some dry meat on a mediocre pita and some tomatoes. However the fries were tasty and I couldn't get enough tzatziki - probably to make up for the bland and dry food. Now the kicker - on top of the mediocre tasting food, my chicken Souvlaki was grilled with a side of human hair. Sadly I didn't notice the long strands of black hair wedged between my chicken pieces until after i took my first bite. Needless to say I went back to the counter to inform them of my discovery, and they were very nice and apologetic about it. The offered to either refund my money, or take a new plate. I took a new plate and she also thew in a free baklava, which was too hard for me to even eat one bite of. it seems like everyone here loves greek souvlaki, but you will definitely not see me here again. Even without the hair incident, I probably wouldn't go back.

Well eee-gads, get a hold of yourself. It's not like I'm proclaiming Greek Souvlaki to be the next great restaurant in the county. For crying out loud, it's a little Greek joint in downtown SLC. So don't think about it too hard, just know that when you've had your fill of American fast food, you've got options. And the folks here have been doing it long enough that you probably can rely on them for a good meal. My experience was simple. I had just spent 2 hours at a local pub (working at an event, mind you) and I needed some place to eat and take a load off. And although it feels a little hasty to jump on the bandwagon after one visit, I just got the feeling that it's pretty much what you're gonna get every time. Upon the recommendation of Heather K, who I ran into rather serendipitously, I got the gyro plate with white sauce. I chose rice, but after seeing other yelpers flip out over the fries, I'm interested in coming back and getting an order of 'em. I was perfectly pleased with the rice, though, and on this late night it's exactly what I wanted. The gyro was splendid. Again, they're not reinventing the wheel with this thing so don't expect Greek fusion or the chef to come out and present you with a lamb tasting menu. Just chomp on the delightfully soft, then oh-so-savory textures and flavors and rejoice in the white sauce. I pounded mine in record time and felt like Tummanysis, the Greek god happy belly. If the gyro isn't your thing, dig into the souvlaki, kebabs, or whatever else tickles your Greek fancy. Pull up a seat stay a while or get it to go. Fountain drinks in the dining area (that's a big deal to me) and enough parking out front that you won't go completely mad, though I was there rather late and it is downtown, after all.

This is probably one of my favorite fast food type restaurants in Salt Lake City. I always get the Low Carb Salad with gyro meat. The salad comes with lettuce of course, tomatoes, olives, feta cheese, and Greek dressing (on the side). The pro-tip is to get tzatziki sauce on the side and top the gyro meat with the sauce. Sometimes I get the the gyro sandwich combo or plate depending on if I want rice or the drink. I have never had a bad experience here and the food is always fresh. The service can be a little slow especially during lunch, but well worth the wait. The portions are large and the drinks are refillable. Prices are reasonable considering the food you get. The only complaints I have are that parking is not great and the bathroom is outside. Other than that, Greek Souvlaki is almost as good much pricier Greek restaurants in the Salt Lake City area.

This was my first visit to Greek Souvlaki. It's a tiny building on the corner, and they have obviously spent some money to update the interior of the building. Nice decorations, tables, and they have a TV in the corner with ESPN. Service is very friendly. I had the gyro with red sauce. The meat was delicious, with just a slight crisp on the edges. Fries were cooked well and their fry sauce surprised me with a bit of spice. Although the gyro is pretty similar to what you can find in every other Greek place around the valley, one item that stuck out was their loukoumades--the Greek version of donuts. Sweet Biden those things were good. You can buy 5 for a couple bucks or go all out and buy ten for about $4. Those things will have me coming back on a frequent basis.

  • Felipe Z.

Great place for lunch if you work in that area, the food is great, and it comes to you fast. The prices are pretty great, for a good combo for less than 10 bucks. The meat was delish, and their fries are actually not bad even when they look quite generic, everything was good, and fast, that was the best part. Fast.

  • Lorryn P.

Were talking fast food here. Super casual place. I am a devoted fan!!! This so beats a burger!! I always chose the low carb plate. With an amazing Greek salad and a chicken souvlaki it is consistent and never disappoints! I opt out of the Greek dressing and get ranch on the side. So when I put five stars, it is earned over 10 years as a regular without a slip up.

  • Kim F.

Low-cal salad (gyro meat) - Healthy...assuming that you ask for it with out dressing and, well let's be honest, even if you get the dressing, it's not that bad. The meat is delicious, the other ingredients are pretty fresh. It's a good, healthy option.

I love this place! Great food! Excellent customer service! Awesome prices! You get so much food for your money! I went in last weekend to grab take out and it only took 5 minutes from ordering to get my food! The gals at the front were so nice and helpful! The food is always fresh, hot and very yummy! The catering is awesome as well!!

It takes a special business to stay around for 40 years, and it is easy to see why Greek Souvlaki has been around for this long. I love Gyros, I have since i can remember - The Smell of Comfort Food. The Meat is done traditionally on a cone, and it is fun to watch as they slice heaping portions of meat off and on to a warm pita, buttered and grilled, the fresh tomatoes, the onions, the delectable Tzatziki Sauce so creamy, and rich. Along with a side of fries. The one MAJOR downside of the Greek Souvlaki is the fact that if you want extra of their awesome fry sauce it will cost you. 38 Cents for one, 75 Cents for Two. But the cost of food, the taste, and the explosion of flavors makes up for this one downside I also have been known to splurge on a pork stick (or two) and some extra pita bread to enjoy. I would heartedly recommend this fine establishment for one, or a large group of people who want some great food.

I love Greek Soulvaki! I always get a consistent and delicious meal from this place. I prefer the 900 South location but I have been going to this one lately because it's more convenient. I just wish the customer service here was a bit better. I usually order on the phone for take out and last time the girl asked me "what?" at least 3 times and then just hung up. It was awkward. They still got my order in but it was still a bit annoying. The time before that, I was waiting around (as was another customer) for what seemed like quite some time while 2 employees were talking in Spanish about some issue one of them had with the cash register. I finally had to interrupt them and say "Hey, I think our orders are ready". They were apologetic and nice but I just prefer not to have the language barrier. To sum up: Tasty Tasty food (the spicy feta dip is amazing). Check out their Murray location for great service.

We had the lamb yero and lamb souvlaki. The lamb yero was tasty with white sauce and very moist. Also the pita was nicely toasted. But I can't say that about the lamb souvlaki, it was soo dry but tasty. Maybe the cook forgot about them. I enjoy the French fries (no fried sauce was offered just used catsup) and the lemony rice. I would go back to Greek Souvlaki and try the something different on the menu but not the souvlaki, if ever I'm back in SLC.

  • Vida A.

So I just spent $9 bucks on bad greek plate, not worth the money. I had the gyro which was cut way too thick and the meat was really dry and lacked in flavor, unlike gyro meat. What made it edible was the white sauce. The rice was ok but lacked in salt and the fries, yuck. Soggy fries, really? They look somewhat fried but soggy in the middle. The salad was just lettuce, nothing great. How can this place be so popular especially for how expensive it is? I rather go to a mom and pop chinese place and get a plate of hot food with soup for less than $6. And the icing on the cake was as i was walking to my car a homeless lady going through the trash flipped me off while getting in my car. I almost turned around to buy her some food but for how pricey this place was and with her bad attitude as if im the one who got her where she is, screw it!

  • Megan G.

If I'm ever in the mood for a gyro in Salt Lake, Greek Souvlaki calls my name. The meat is delicious and the pita is always perfect. The only problem I have is that the sauce is never spread evenly and I like having sauce in every bite instead of two or three bites of just sauce (but it is quite good). I also really like their fries. As for the rest of the food, the souvlaki is just okay as is the rice. I'd only ever go there if I want a gyro and fries.

I ate here once last fall when I had one hour in between meetings and it was ok. I ordered the Greek salad with gyro meat. The joint was busy (it was lunchtime,) but my take out order came out fairly quickly. Unfortunately the gyro meat was cooked to oblivion, but other than being dry had good flavour. The real winner was the slice of spanikopita I ordered on a whim. It was excellent- not the folded triangles you normally find in the states, but the sheet pan style spanikopita your yiayia makes. The filling was perfect- creamy and full of fresh flavour, and the puff pastry made my day.

  • Lexi S.

Solid place. I can count on having a really tasty gyro (white sauce), for cheap and it will be delicious each time. I am also a big fan of the lemon, rice soup. Not to mention, chicken souvlaki over greek salad. Definitely a crowd pleaser. Good food, nice people, and a casual place to grab a bite.

    (4)
  • Alan C.

I had the chicken and pork souvlaki, and it was very dry. Service was slow. It is a small, uncomfortable, fast food place, with a TV playing a soccer game. And they charged extra for a tiny little container of extra sauce. In part, my disappointment is reflective of the fact that I did not expect a fast food atmosphere and that my expectation from reading the Yelp reviews were high. I think people who are accustomed to fast food have lower expectations and a lower scale on which they rate a restaurant. So, if nothing else, this is an alert to potential diners: GREEK FOOD COMES IN FAST FOOD TOO! AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM!

First visit to Greek Souvlaki. Didn't love it and didn't hate it. I was a little annoyed they don't really have a restroom to wash my hands. You have to take a key (which I never saw) from the front counter and go outside to use the restroom. As for the food, chicken souvlaki didn't come with any sauce. I paid extra $0.54 to get a small tzatziki sauce to go with it. Rice was buttery and al dente, which I liked. Fries were great and so was the gyro/pita. However, it wasn't anything I would go back for even though I crave gyros every so often. I prefer Crowne Burger's service and dining space.

I never stray from the gyro white sauce, but the kabob plate looks good as well. This is my go to gyro place I've tried other and will continue to but until I find a better one this is where I go.

Inexpensive and yummy Gyro was as expected, but the standout was the Greek doughnuts, called loukomades. These were the highlight!

I would be happy to go to Greek Souvlaki and just get a giant bowl of their rice, LOVE that stuff. I would give 5 stars except I have never tried anything but the chicken souvlaki, rice and salad. I love it so much I am afraid to stray for fear I will end up hating the place. The service at this location is also a tad on the slow side. I've been to another location in Murray that was faster.

They're good gyros. Just don't try to eat two. One leaves you hungry but it tastes great so you just want more of a good thing. Try to eat two and the taste is just overwhelming your mouth and you feel stuffed and over-seasoned. The beef is seasoned strongly. Keep it to just one gyro a visit and it won't feel like its overstayed its welcome in your mouth and stomach

Greek Souvlaki is good. The Lamb Yeero is the best thing on their menu. I recommend getting the Yeero with the traditional white Tzatziki sauce. I don't get people raving about the red sauce. I also recommend trying the lemon rice since it is a really good. The fries are great because I am a thick french frie type of guy and their fry sauce just adds to the flavor. Tip: Try to avoid the lunchtime crowds since this place gets busy. It seems that they are just rushing your food order and does not taste the same as when you eat any other time.

Excellent Gyro (comes in 2nd to the Mad Greek though). I'm not one to rave about french fries, but these were great. Hot out of the fryer with great fry sauce (God, I miss fry sauce where I live). Gets 4.5 stars.

I came here because of the reputation but was disappointed. I was looking for higher quality food, not fast food. I had the chicken souvlaki sandwich. I liked that they had veggies in there, but the meat was bland and the sandwich was drenched in sauce. The rice was very good though. If you want high quality Greek food, go to Aristo's. This is decent in terms of fast food, but that's all it is.

Sometimes I feel like it's hard to hit up all the Greek places in town. That could also be because once I find one I love, I'm not sure I want to venture out. The service was fast and friendly and the menu offerings looked good. I got one of my standard go-to's - the chicken souvlaki plate. The rice was standard, salad w/house dressing good, and the pita was somewhere around average. Fries are good as others have mentioned. Some bites seemed better than others. The real reason I'm giving it only three stars was that my chicken souvlaki was extremely dry. Like the kind of dry you're not sure you can finish chewing because it's sucked up all the saliva in your mouth and you can't chew further nor swallow that giant dry lump down. I'll venture back because everyone else seems to like their food and maybe it was an off day. Or maybe their chicken just always required Tzatziki sauce.

Mmmmmm... gyros. I have been turned from chicken to the traditional gyro meat.. the sweet sweet lamb. All it took was one bite of Manfriend's gyro... I messed up. Should've gotten the real deal, not the chicken. I can't lie, I was actually planning on going to City Greek, but upon arrival, (at 7:30 this evening), they were closed. :( One sign on the door read "OPEN MON-SAT til Midnight. The other said City Greek is CLOSED). It confused me, and made me rather sad. But the second, more grim sign was no lie... they were dark and empty. I wasn't super excited about coming to Souvlaki, since I had tried the food at another location, and while it wasn't bad in any way, it just wasn't that great. This time, I knew I needed to order something gyro-related, so I ordered the chicken gyro plate, while Manfriend ordered the gyro plate. The amount of food they give you for 8 bucks or so is a good deal.. I am insanely stuffed right now. The plate comes with a gyro, fries, rice, and salad. The salad is pretty blah, standard iceberg, a cucumber slice, and croutons. The rice is delicious, light and lemony. And the fries... oh the fries! Crispy and delicious... perfectly cooked, in my opinion. I didn't get to try the raved about fry sauce, because it wasnt included in my order. =/ Get the gyros with the white sauce... I don't even know what the red sauce is or tastes like, but you want the white sauce. The chicken gyro is ok... the chicken chunks are spiced nicely and tender, and it also includes zuchinni, onions, and tomatoes. But that lamb gyro.... oh god. The meat is super tender and spiced PERFECTLY... I kicked myself for not ordering it myself. Next time, Souvlaki! (Does anyone else just enjoy saying that?) I also ordered a half-size of the doughnuts... meh. I thought they would be a bit softer, perhaps a little less... greasy? I'm not sure, they just weren't superb to me.. The service is well... slow. It took quite some time to get our to-go order... about 25 minutes, actually. I'd be upset, if it weren't for that damn gyro...

In an effort to persuade my sister to try something not Asian for our regular lunch outings, we found ourselves substituting our soupy meat cravings for our shaved meat cravings.... I'm sometimes a carnivore, what can I say? Anyways, so we ended up here one day for lunch and I had heard great things about their gyros. I ordered the gyro combo with fries and a drink. My favorite thing about their entire meal were my fries, and I'm not really a fry kind of person. The gyro was okay, but a little too much on the salty side for me, and had far too much white sauce for my liking. I was only able to finish eating about half of it and my sister had finished the rest. I then went on to try their rice pudding, which again was so so. The rice wasn't cooked well enough for me and it seemed as if they just cooked rice in milk and put nutmeg on top, no ounce of sweetness apart from the natural sweetness of rice there. I would give them a lower star rating, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt that it may have been an off day. Also, I went back and got a small bit of baklava and that made me forget all about the gyro. So if you're looking for some greek food fast, greek souvlaki isn't a bad way to go, but it's definitely not my first choice.

04.22.11 first visit ambience: B+ nice enough. pretty clean. flat screen in the corner in case of boredom. service: B+ prompt. polite enough. food: B+ rice and fries? overkill in my opinion. plus the rice isn't very good at all. lamb gyro reminded me of my senior year in high school, when we'd skip a class, go down the hill to get gyros and fries for lunch. decent gyro. fries good. crunchy. and the fry sauce ain't bad either. a bit thick, a bit spicy - almost reminded me of the consistency of romesco sauce. overall: B+ just decent fast food. sidenote: celebrity sighting - kyle beckerman getting some take-out

No lamb plate? Gyro meat was under cooked and didn't have authentic spices. The tzatziki sauce tasted bland and didn't have a bite to it. I've never been disappointed with a meal as I was here.

Oh lord (zeus??) have mercy! The first Greek I've ever had and by far the best. All the main dishes are brilliant but the highlight of the meal may be the lemon rice. Quick delicious food in the heart of downtown. just....just do it. just go. now.

This place is a great alternative when you are sick of the 'same old same old'. I always get the chicken gyro. I have had both white and red sauce and I THINK I prefer white sauce. Although both would be very good. I get the delicious lemon rice with my gyro. I'm hearing alot of great thing's about their fries on Yelp, but I honestly don't think they are that great. You will be spending a little more than with traditional fast food (gyro is $9) But you get PLENTY of food.

Yowza, I was impressed! I have been driving past this place for a month thinking it looked too dingy. But I was wrong. The booths, tables, and design inside are actually fairly nice for a small little greek diner experience. The prices were comparable to other greek joints. The gyro was great--just the right taste you expect from lamb, and the white sauce was spot on. I've also had the rice, fries, and salad. The rice was good; not too weird. I hate it when I get greek rice and it's too weird to eat. The fries are comparable to Crown Burger; the fry sauce is full of yummy spices. And you get to PICK your salad dressing--which is amazing because as much as I try, I don't like greek salad dressing. The menu had cheap smaller meals that include just a sandwich and a side, as well as fuller meals, and dessert. They also have an outside sitting area. The inside is nice but small.

I love love love this restaurant. My friend frist introduced me to it years ago, then my oldest sister reintroduced me a couple years ago. It is by far my favorite restaurant now. So good, in fact, that we ordered in en masse for my wedding luncheon (the chicken kabobs and lemon rice and pitas), and everyone kept asking my mom where they found such delicious food. It's quick, it's a wonderful price, and it's delicious. I've tried a few other Greek places around Salt Lake, and none can compare to the Greek Souvlaki. I've gotten several friends and my director at work all hooked on it. I just can't sing their praises enough. Now I'm craving it again...

It's Utah's best Gyro, hands down. Sadly the old Greek Shishkabob, that served the WORLDS best Gyro, shut down, leaving this place the heir to the local throne. One of the few in town that offers red sauce, which while good, is just not the same as the Greek Shishkabob had - ok - I'll stop bemoaning an institution long since gone. I like that they have two locations - downtown and Murray. And I REALLY like that they sell spaghetti with Mizithra...something you used to have to suffer the Spaghetti Factory to get. mmmm mizithra.... The rest of the menu is all standard Greek fast food, nothing special (though I am a big fan of their rice). I will offer a complaint here though. I think their gyros are like $6 or $7 just for the sandwich. I don't mean to sound like a cheap old man - but that's pretty steep in my opinion (though not as bad as the Mad Greek that charges $10 for one...tsk tsk tsk) OH.....and what's up with New Yorkers - even GREEK New Yorkers calling em Gyros instead of Yeeros??? New Yorkers - ya'll are weird! But DAYMN you do have good Yeeros!

  • Jimmy J.

I ate the Gyros platter and a side salad. The generous serving of meat was warm and tasty, if slightly salty. The pita was tender and the vegetables fresh. The atmosphere is what I'd characterize as cafeteria or frosty. The tables are small and the lobby shares space with the dining room...like a Taco Bell or a Wendy's. That means that it's noisy, but I didn't come for the ambiance, I came for the highly recommended food. And the food was worth it. The only caveat I'll issue: if you're on a carb-restricted diet, it's hard to get a complete (filling) meal. I'm glad I stopped by and I encourage others to do so.

Don't eat at Greek Souvlaki if you're a vegetarian. Their definition of a vegetarian meal is one that doesn't have pieces of meat. Take for example, their vegetarian gyro. The rice is made with chicken broth! When my husband asked them about the vegetarian gyro, they said it was still vegetarian because there was no chicken in the dish, only chicken flavor. Well, when the "flavor" comes from chickens, it's not vegetarian.

90% of my onion rings were dry and inedible. On a positive note, 30% my french fries were edible. My gyro had a rock-like piece of meat right in the middle of it. I will not be back.

Love this place. Best Gyro I have ever had. The rice is ok, and the french fries are ok, but what you really want is to get a Gyro with white sauce. Great stuff and a great price for what you get.

Let me preface that this review is about the coke, and not the sheer awesomeness that is Greek souvlaki. Their fry sauce is divine; I live in California and I literally transport it back home with me, even if it requires paying money to place the stuff in checked luggage (damn three ounce rule!). I am a huge fan, but, when I eat there I always find myself a bit let down by the coke. There is something just a bit bland about the mix (perhaps too little syrup?) so I always go for the Pibb instead. They do make a great glass of Pibb, however. Perhaps I am just a sucker for Pibb from the fountain, but I love their blend. Nevertheless, as a devoted coke-a-phile, I feel it is my duty to comment on the lackluster selection of the GS. On a side note, their pitas are delicious and the pork souvlaki a dream! Go there and try them with the fry sauce; your life will never be the same.

Good quality, typical Greek fast food. I usually opt for the Gyro combo with fries. Seems like they've started stuffing more meat in the Gyro's lately. Fries are always nice and crispy, and I think they must use some of their red Gyro sauce in the fry sauce because its a little spicy. I have had the souvlaki before and it's been good as well. The pita tastes like its out of a bag, but still good. They also have other greek foos like spinach pie and pastitsioI like how they have lemon and lime wedges by the soda fountain. I have been coming here for at least 15 years and have never been disappointed. Service is always friendly, and when I call ahead for take-out, there's never a long wait.

Love this place!! They have an awesome dinner special from time to time and you can't beat it! If you get the opportunity to order it, get it! It feeds 4 easily. But who doesn't love leftovers?? My favorite item to order is the low-carb salad. You get greens with feta, a chicken kabob, and they have a light dressing on it. YUM! Give this place a try and you'll be happy that you did!

  • Harsha R.

I used to be a big fan of this place. Loved their chicken souvlaki in pita, gyro and rice. Quick, cheap and tasty. The way it should be! But I don't know what happened the last time I was there. The chicken was not cooked well and the rice was kind of stale. I don't think I will be going back in a hurry.

I can't get enough of this place! I have NEVER had a bad meal from any of the locations. When you tell someone that likes Greek. Order whatever you like and I promise it will be good? That is a true compliment any food establishment. I will never stop coming to this place.

Yep - a fan - a serious fan. OPA!!!!!! The gyro is fresh and completely overstuffed - Efharisto poli (thank you very much). The rice is off the hook with its lemon zest and served super warm (they way rice should be). Salad with Greek dressing sublime (thanks for the big cucumber slices) and the fries are great (love the spicy thick fry sauce). Super clean interior and even NFL game on the TV. Not half bad for a corner in Salt Lake City! The only improvement could be if the place were located on Mykanos and I was there enjoying it instead. Totally appreciate the quality and effort that has gone into this spot - also very friendly staff. Kalí tíhi

  • Mike P.

What makes a Greek restaurant authentic is their lemon rice soup. This place fails in that category. They either opened a can for this soup, or the chicken comes from a bag at Costco. You pay a very high price for one ladle of soup in a styrofoam cup (environmentally incorrect). The pittas are not fresh, they probably come from Costco as well. The only thing good about this place is that it is not own by Wall Street (I have not verified that) as I do not do corporate restaurants.

  • Y K.

I live in SF and I miss Greek Souvlaki. I don't care how unauthentic or Americanized their food is. I have no idea. I don't care. It tastes amazing. I miss the tender Gyro meat of beef+lamb, the most equally cripsy and tender golden fries, spicy fry sauce, delicious, creamy and cinammony rice pudding... even the yogurt sauce. Or the red sauce!!! And the large, chunky, fresh vegetables served with everything, even down to the toasty, soft pita. They also had great burgers and great fish sandwich - seriously, this place is the best.

  • Paula Rose W.

The fries are pretty phenomenal (esp. for a Greek place). Nice and crisp on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Their version of Fry sauce is a pretty fine example of everything fry sauce should be (not just some mixture of ketchup and mayo)!!! The Gyro does the job when it comes to satisfying a gyro craving although the meat can be a touch dry at times. The spice is nice and its not too gamey. I know its wrong, but I don't always feel like I want the taste of lamb to over power the rest of the gyro. They make a pretty good chicken lemon soup. They use orzo instead of rice which I enjoy the texture of more. Parking for this location is small, but I've not had a problem.

Holy crap I love this place. I would be the happiest person alive to never have to go to Utah again but can easily be bribed into returning if a meal or two at Greek Souvlaki is promised. LOOVE the red sauce. I don't know what it's called other than 'red sauce' and I've never been able to find it at any of the other Greek places I've hit up. I'm also a huge fan of their fry sauce. I hated on that crap for a couple years before actually trying theirs and was instantly won over. Lucky for me, I lived only a couple blocks from the Greek Souvlaki downtown and rode my bike up there probably more than once a week to get my chicken gyro with extra red sauce and fries. Great food - I recommend it to everyone visiting Salt Lake and I just wished they'd franchise and open one up here in Seattle.

To me, a five star rating indicates that a particular restaurant thoroughly succeeds at what they are trying to accomplish. Greek Souvlaki in downtown Salt Lake is not five stars in the way that say, Log Haven is five stars. But they are peerless when it comes to "fast" Greek food. Everything is extremely good from the stellar chicken souvlaki to the delectable domathes; from the filling pastitio to the wonderfully crisp fries. But my favorite dish has to be in my top three favorite sandwiches I've eaten anywhere in Utah, along with Moochie's meatball sub, and the Reuben at the Wasatch Pub in Park City. The Philly Yeero is mind-boggling. The lamb yeero meat in this dish is so stunningly good ,so perfectly cooked and seasoned, that even the most hardcore vegetarian would be tempted to go off the wagon. Mixed with sauteed onion and peppers and topped with melted cheeses, all wrapped in a hot pita, this is a flavor extravaganza. And it's only eight bucks for the combo meal. This sandwich induces more moans of pleasure than any $40 steak I've had at rip off joints like Ruth's Chris Steakhouse or Fleming's. Greek Souvlaki downtown. . . Do it, do it, do it.

Who knew that Greek food in Utah was so good? When people come visit me from out of town, this is always the place that they want to go to again before they leave. I've never had anything but the gyros because they so flippin' good that I don't ever want to order anything else. Great fries, too, and this place has my favorite fry sauce in town.

So I'm standing in line waiting to make my order when suddenly this little old lady opens the door to the place and comes halfway in. She's got a dog with her--a crazy little dog--and is unable to come all the way inside. What's crazier is that she's literally trying to order from the door, trying to get people at the counter to help her. I guess nobody ever told her that it's common etiquette NOT to bring a dog into a restaurant. In the meantime, the dog is barking uncontrollably at everything that moves, making my wait for chicken Souvlaki a little bit uncomfortable. I'm thinking to myself that now would be a good time to be packing a Taser or some other electrical immobilization device. Of course, nobody wants to go near her, because the dog is snapping and snarling and doesn't appear to be very well socialized. Nobody wants to appear unhelpful to a senior citizen either, but there is no practical way anyone can help. None of the counter help has the balls to tell her to take her miniature Cujo, tie it up outside, and come back in to make her food order like a normal person. After what feels like an eternity, my order is finally ready. I pay the girl and negotiate my way out of the door, around the dog, its teeth, and the little old lady, and jump back into my car, instinctively locking the doors. Was the whole ordeal worth it? Not really, since the chicken was pretty dry and had me thinking about Gordon Ramsey--you know, when he comes across a piece of overcooked chicken in Hell's Kitchen and slams it against the wall? For now, I think I'll stick with Crown Burger, until I try some of the other restaurants recommended by Yelpers that don't allow dogs ... and serve a little bit higher caliber of Greek food.

I love this place! The rice is excellent, the chicken souvlaki is sooooooo good, but its the avgolemono (chicken lemon rice) soup that keeps bringing me back. I live in Seattle, but visit SLC frequently and I eat here at least once or twice every visit.

Greek Souvlaki has been in Salt Lake forever. Greek owned, it's one of the best places for a gyro or souvlaki. Try the gyro with their signature "red sauce." Don't forget to order a fresh Greek salad with the house dressing.

This is the best Greek in Salt Lake City. I have been on the hunt to find good Greek in Austin, but I haven't come close to the quality of Greek Souvlaki. I miss this place! If you live in Salt Lake, take advantage of this Greek food!

Had the standard gyro. It's limited by the ingredient quality: the meat, a beef/lamb blend, is pressed sausagy stuff. The pita seemed fresh and the red sauce was nice. Came with rice, which was a little stocky for me, and I like stocky. Decent place, suspect there are better gyros in this town.
